denver,nc..
i've become less than thrilled with our $800 a month and rising electric rates so, i've decided to do something about it!

i've installed 36-216 watt sharp solar panels! i should average 1500kwh a month or more and this system should reduce it by and avarage of 1100kwh/month!..i know its not really fish related but i had to shut down my pond due to the high cost of heating and filtering the water..with any luck, i'll be able to get another pond or more tanks without substantial electric bills!!:headbang2

wow thats a great idea,go solar haha,we thought about doing it just because we already have a wood burner to heat our house and everything else,

nice
have you figured out how much you will save a month?

1100KWh reduction / 1500KWh average per month = 73% reduction per month

73% reduction X $800 average month = $584 saved per month

NICE!!!!:headbang2

I wish I could do something like that down here in FL, our hurricanes would just mess them up.

Oh wow, that a great idea! I'll definatly remember that for when I can finally have tropical ponds...was wondering how I'd deal with heating costs.

I have a friend who did that for just the same reason! The exception is that he had about twice as many panels installed and is thinking about doubling that! He wants to go 100% solar. The excess gets sold to the power company by day and then he draws from his "surplus' by night without having to mess with batteries. At the time of installation California had a $10,000 rebate plan that he got! The initial installation cost him about $20,000 after the rebate which included installation. If you live in a windy area that allows wind generators they make alot more $ for the $ than solar. Unfortunately alot of cities (and neighbors!) consider them an eyesore and the bigger ones do make a fair amount of noise if you live close to them.

Heating is a different story. It is more efficient and less costly to go with a separate solar water heating system than electric solar panels. That's if you live in an area that doesn't freeze or you do a heat exchanger type with an antifreeze mix.
