1100KWh reduction / 1500KWh average per month = 73% reduction per month
73% reduction X $800 average month = $584 saved per month

Wow.... that would pay itself off in a matter of a few years! Leading to my next question! CJ, what's the going rate to do something like that? How is it priced out?

I wish I could do something like that down here in FL, our hurricanes would just mess them up.

I live in a "military compound" gated community with lots of rules and solar panels on roof arent allowed.

In your backyard you can do what you want one of neighbors has solar "dish" I know they make flat panels you can lay on ground, etc.
You dont have to go with panels for roof. Granted imagine best option as doesnt take up space but the dish (looks like large direct tv dish and you point it at sun) isnt bad

Not to be an *** but last I checked into this the cost wasn't worth it. It would take almost 10 years to pay itself off unless you got "funding" by the state, which a lot of states offer. Like a tax reduction is what I meant. A hot water heater is the cheapest thing you could have done and should still do. All you need is some copper pipes nice mat black paint and some plexi or even regular glass, and a pressure release valve. You would be suprised how hot that water can get. From what I gather thats like barely under the cost of A/C.
Hats off to ya anyway. I am all about screwing the electric company because they truley enjoy screwing me.

Takes 10 years to pay for itself, huh? Most people plan on owning their houses for 20, 30, even 50 years. Most people have a 30 year mortgage on their home. I'm betting that if he financed the panels, the payments are less than the money he is saving, anyway.

I'm just disgusted by the abnormally high use of energy.

At least you did something about it, I'm sure having clean energy sources wasn't the top of your list for reasons to cut down on your energy bill but at least it's clean now.

very cool, if i ever get a house i would like to do same thing, only bad think is its mosly coudy and raining here

you gotta be stoked with what your saving now, specially if your paying the solar panels off over an extended period of time, $800 would have to be someones weekly wage over there wouldn't it?

Solar is only cost effective to people who can afford it. Most people can not afford to buy Solar so I would not consider it a viable option unless your rich.

Cost of solar system?
Paid out of pocket or by loan? If financed what rate/term, deductible?
Current cost per kW?
Age of current roof?

Most of the solar break even points are calculated by trading the solar credits SRC's but their value has obviously gone down from 600 to 300 per credit since more people have installed solar. The demand for the credit will continue to go down as more people install solar. This pushes every installed units break even point further out.
