I like the term believer better than being "religious." Religion can be a very dangerous thing, despite its good intentions. Being a "Christian" or "believer" is really all about relationships, not religion.
In regards to the subject of those "snake-handling" churches, this is another somewhat touchy topic for me for three reasons: being a responsible snake keeper, a Southerner, as well as Christian raised under the Pentacostal faith (which is the dominant doctrine of the snake-handlers). Yes, Mark 16 does say that, but the Bible also says (dont have the exact scripture in front of me) not to test the Lord your God. In other words, God gave us common sense, and routinely free-handling venomous snakes is not using that gift. Its about as absurd as jay-walking through a Los Angeles freeway during rush hour traffic. I really don't think God intended Mark 16:17-20 to be taken literally. Gotta love fundamentalists!
So yeah, whenever it is revealed that I am both pentacostal and a reptile hobbyists, I'm frequently asked if I go to a 'snake-handling" church. It does offend me a lot of times, but some people just dont know any better. Like a professor of mine once said, "common sense is an oxymoron."
