I don't think you should remove all forms of cover. He will definitely appreciate a cave or large plant to hide behind. And as Osca said, if he isnt swimming around at least you'll see him in the corner. But is that what you want? A fish cowering in the corner of the tank?
Even my red devil, as boisterous as he is, enjoys some cover.

NO! That is certainly NOT what i want which is why i will be going for sand as bottom and a large plant as hideout, thanks for your help :)
