Not trying to sound like an idiot or cause an argument but have you ever noticed the less you know about cichlids the fewer problems?? About 8 years ago, before I found the internet and people who knew so much about cichlid keeping, I had (HUGE TANK) 125gal.!! Its inhabitants where 16in. giant gourami, 16in. pacu, 14in. male jag, 12in. male dovii, 10in. pbass, 6in. male jag, several silver dollars and some small freddies!! Little nips here and there but no major issues, Never did a water change or gravel vac. , just added water when needed!! I guess what Im getting at is the more I learn about these fish the less luck I have!! sORRY FOR THE LONG POST i JUST HAD TO GET THAT OFF MY CHEST!!!:headbang2 :ROFL: :eek: :chillpill:
 
Seems to be one of those cases of "dumb-luck". I know what you're saying, but I think the fish I keep today seem healthier and happier than the ones I kept years ago. I attribute this to my desire to learn something new about fish keeping as often as possible. A truly wise man realizes how little he really knows.
 
they were probably so weak from bad conditions that they didnt have the will to defent (defend) their territory. They probably didnt "want" any territory. :ROFL:

I agree, I have a 90 gal tank that I haven't changed the water in in 4 months and the fish and tank look great but they have stopped spawning.

Back in the day I never did a water change and I wanted to see how the fish and tank would do if I didn't do any. This weekend I'm going to restart water changes on this tank.

BTW me editing a post for spelling is like a dovi calling a guppy a preditor. :ROFL:
 
very true rally, another thing think of the stentch in ur house YUCK!
 
I agree with you 100%, back in the day I used to have nine tanks, very low maintainance, basically just providing them with food.

now I have the biggest tank I have ever owned, but it has been more work then I can handle and I have invested the most money ever!

not to derail this thread but,
I have some large cichlids and it seems as thought i have been fighting hole-in-the-head for ever :cry: , any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! and thanks in advance!!

anyway, I do love the fish and eventually want to get an even bigger tank, wish me luck!!

THe more you know, the more you realize what you are doing wrong. If you didn't know you were doing anything wrong, you would think you have less problems.

Trust me, regular water changes and gravel vacs mean your fish are healthier now than your old fish before.
 
some causes of HIHD is to much consumption of goldfish,especially with RedDevils and Oscars, or poor water quality.:naughty:

I agree , my fish are happier and healthier, but its so frustrating devoting these huge tanks to so few fish
