Remove a swallowed hook or not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So it's half bullhead, half flounder. Nice.

Any paper mills upstream or anything that might be dumping toxins in the water? Can't say I've ever seen that before.

An update on the hook removal. I did remove the hook. When I was pulling it out it was hooked through his gut, so I had to pull part of his stomach through his throat in order to see it. I was able to get the hook out and pushed his stomach back down his throat. I thought he was a goner for sure after that but I was wrong.
It's been about a month and he is eating, swimming, and pooping just fine.
Here is a picture of his good side, the side with the eye.BullHead2.jpg

i do alot of fishing. never pull the hook out. instead, if u can manage, push it out. that way the barb never tears anything up. clip the line and push the hook right out thru the exit wound. there is a way you can pull the hook out. heres a link to pdf file thats very useful.

Thank you for the link, I will have to try that, seams complicated reading it from a pdf I'll have to find a video on it to help me understand it better.
I did push the hook through though, I cut the eye off with wire cutters and pulled it through so I didn't have to pull the barb back through.

Interesting method, it makes sense. If you spin the hook around and apply upward pressure away from the barb, it will stretch the hole a little bit. The hook should slide out of the hole since the barb won't be touching the opposite side of the hole. Will have to try that sometime.

Usually I just push it through enough to expose the barb, and cut the tip of the hook off just past the barb with some small wire snips. Then you can pull it back out without issue unless the shank of the hook is barbed as well.
