I use Estes Ultra reef sand, and believe rays do better on a substrate instead of bare bottom. You won't need an inch of sand, 1/2 inch will work. If you do remove the Black Moon sand, use a vinyl hose and syphon it out when performing water changes.

You don't have to remove it all at once. Once established, the sand will contain lots of beneficial bacteria. Removing it all at once can upset your system.

I agree spotfin, I to believe rays do better and feel more secure with some type of substrate,
1/2 or less. Also with out, it they seem to have issues with pushing off with their feet.
I also noticed with my new marble pups, while watching them through the bottom on a bare bottom,
that they had issues feeding as when the pounced on the food it would move and tend to slide past their mouths.
Once I put 1/4 inch of Ultra Reef they were pounding whatever I put in there.

rays also burn off more food in a bare bottom tank as they need to move the flips twice as much to move

which means they do more excercise and become fitter and stronger in b&b tank

go bb. No need to worry about substrate harbouring Harmful bacteria.

I took out the Moon sand an replaced it with 3M ColorQuartz S-Grade.... VERY WORTHWHILE CHANGE.

good choice mate. once they settle again your rays will love you for it.

I use the Carribsea sand in my 320 and the rays have had no problems. In my 130g grow out tank I use play sand from Home Depot, no redness at all on the pups. In my 270g I have 2 motro (10" and 8") and ordinary aquarium gravel. Still no problems (bottom of disks look normal). They do have a harder time covering themselves, though, as the gravel is coarser.

If money is an issue I'd say go with well washed play sand. It works well for me.

;) Hi. Been following along & still speculating but what about CaribSea Eco-Complete. It's kinda muddy, silty but is it ok for rays??
