Marineland likes to be handy and put the carbon in the cartridge so everything is ready to go, but most of us do not use carbon (I do not as of today) and removing the carbon was a royal pain in my bass. If you are going to do it, use the generic ones because they are the easiest thing to take apart. Just cut the top and bottom and the seams and dump the carbon. The Marineland one is hard and took a utility knife and scissors and the material is a lot cheaper.
So, if you want to do it, make sure you have the Generic filter pads you get at the LFS.
