Well it’s been a blast watching my convict pair defend their fry; I had so much fun watching them, I plan to keep having them breed so I can watch continuously. The fry are 16 days since they were wrigglers, so I think they are ready to move on. My female is showcasing her breeding dress once again, so I want to do something before the situation gets out of control.

I plan to use the fry as feeders, but which tank, or what do you think will eat them? I have a Siamese fighter in a 6.6 gallon, and a 3 ½ inch firemouth and 6 tiger barbs in a 20 long.

Also, and most importantly, how should I go about getting them out? My gravel vacuum isn’t working atm, so that rules siphoning out. I suppose netting them?

This white on white reply box is annoying.... But anyway, I think you are in trouble either way, in some community tanks, female bettas are kept as fry control, and firemouth will probably look a little fatter if you put them in that tank

Well I netted them all out last night, and put them in with the firemouth. The parents looked really distressed, so I shut the light off so they would calm down. I'll admit I felt kinda bad for the cons; taking their babies away from them. All the male could do was peck at the net, and the female just stared.:(

Well out of the 20 fry I put in with the firemouth, 3 were left. They were just hunkering down behind a cichlid stone, and I felt kinda bad for them. So I netted them out and put 2 back in with their parents and 1 in a tank with a betta. The parents are acting as if nothing's changed; they are in protection/parenting mode once again, and they seem happy as ever to have 2 of their babies back!

I just Fry Napped my Convicts Fry today as well. Moved at least 100 fry into the Grow out tank. I use a net as well at about 3 weeks. Mom already holed up inside her cave and I'm sure I'll have fresh Fry by the end of June.

That's basically my procedure also, I leave the fry with their parents for at least 2 weeks. They quickly spawned again once their fry were gone, I now have wrigglers.

I did notice the minute I stole the parents' fry, they went crazy. I sol-vented this by turning the lights off, so they settled down.

I got home from work tonight, and the first thing I did was look in my tanks. In my regular 20, the shark and algae eater were huddled in the corner, which is kinda odd, and lo and behold:

I knew that they had eggs, as my pair were guarding the flowerpot, but how it is formed, I could’nt see them. It looks like there’s almost 3 X as many fry as the 1st batch. I might have to starve my firemouth for a few days so he eats them!

Man.. I love cons, try selling your cons on craigslist... I mean... if they have 30 fry and you sell for a 1$ each.. or get another firemouth... although with your luck they would breed too
