I'd just run the canisters up through the holes inside the overflows. Now, if they're right in the corner and exposed, meaning you can see them from the sides of the tank, then yeah, I'd try to trade it to someone who wouldn't have visible sides.
I have an overflow in one of my tanks that I'm not using and I hate it, but it's not worth the effort to try to remove it. It'd just look like crap.
