These are very stubborn parasites to destroy, the level of salt needed to kill these nasties would have to be so concentrated that it would kill any freshwater species of fish, therefore salt could never be described as a remedy to eradicate these lice.

:)

all this arguing and no mention of the fact these little nasties laying eggs in the tank!
you need to treat the tank with dimilin . and even then the eggs are tough little things that can survive the medication! so youneed to repeat the treatment 2 0r 3 times at 7 to 10 day intervals to make sure the system is clear!

this is all from a vet who specializes in fish!!!!!!! and double checked with my friend who has a doctorate in marine biology but worked with koi and tropical freshwater fish for 15 years!

dont even try using salt as david is right about the 3.5% salt needed.

some people on here really shouldnt offer advice , even with good intentions as someones rays are going to get killed as a result!

What ever guys but the salt worked for me and it was the fish lice. So let it go. Let this guy fix his problem and go on with it. Like i said sorry for this bull crap and ILL apologize for these guys too. Ive only been doing this stuff for 30 years and everyone else knows more. Good luck. I had rays myself when it happened and i have four now that are breeding. So ive fixed my problems myself because of people like you all down grading everyone and saying that we are trying to kill their fish which is not true. So this is my last post on this link so this guy can go on with his problem.

Now that we have established that you can spell 'google',
Please show me 1 link...just one, that tells you that salt can kill Argulus in any concentration that an Amazonian ray could survive. :)
Sorry this is the last post. But heres a link for koi fish ( i know this is for rays) but the salt causes the lice to release on the fish and go to the floor and then die. Thats were the vaccuming out the gravel every day would come into play to get them out. I accually found two links on this but this one read the clearest.http://www.koiandponds.com/disease-fishlice.htm So maybe this might explain a little better. Just like giving a salt water fish a freshwater bath to get rid of ich. All things can be done in different ways. I see that there is meds out there for it but when this happened it was back when i first started dealing in rays. Wasnt for sure on what to use back then and that is what was recommended. Hopefully this will clear up some things.

OK, a quote from your link:

>> subjecting the koi to a strong salt bath for about 10 minutes may also cause the lice to remove its grip on the koi and eventually die in the salt bath, but extreme care must be taken to ensure that the koi can survive the salt concentration used<<

OK, so note the bit about "koi"....not exactly a ray is it?
but even for a fish as hardy as Koi it says "extreme care must be taken to ensure that the koi can survive the salt concentration used".
btw i think you are looking for the phrase 'osmotic shock'.
Are you certain that was your last post?
