Removing PADS on FX5?>

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i buy big chunks of filter padding and cut them to size. the padding gets clogged very fast when thick.

ive been using one thin layer in every basket. this helps the flow stay stronger, longer...

the sponges i only rinse every month or two...

Many people think that canister filters are designed to remove fish feces from the tank bottom..they are not

Umm..... This won't make a difference in the outer sponges really. The surface area is huge.

Its a filter, it can and will filter out poo at the bottom of the tank and I am pretty sure you don't need to design a filter to do this.

Well, it certainly will make a difference, regardless of the surface area. Moreover, heavily contaminating filter media with fish waste will have a significantly negative effect upon your ability to maintain water quality. Obviously, if the fish waste is inside the canister it sort of thwarts your ability to siphon it out of the tank. Unless, of course, you want to service your filter each week. This would seem to be obvious.

You're pretty sure that you don't need to design a filter to do what exactly?

I am one that never had luck with the FX5! I wish I had a good story to tell but I was tired of Taking that large trash can of a filter out under the stand and clean the BLUE pads!! I took out the blue pads all together and then just put in Bio-media (then the Micro bubbles came) then I said the Hell with this.... went with the trusty ol' Rena XP3's!

never have changed my stock pads. no flow probs here.

Sucking all the fish feces into the filter is an aesthetic benefit only, unless you clean the filter as often as you clean the tank. Otherwise it remains in the system until the filter is rinsed out.

Having fish waste in the filter is not much worse than letting it decay in the tank. I really just don't see your previous argument. Especially if you are doing weekly or bi-weekly water changes.

Having the filter suck up ANY junk is an aesthetic benefit only, point? Either its decaying in your tank or your filter, you pick.
