i have decided to replace the plastic trim around the top and bottom of my 120. what is the best way to remove it? the silicon is giving me some trouble. i don't plan on salvaging the old trim so the process can include destroying it.

Um think there is some stuff you can get at the home depot or any building store that removes calking i remember using it for my bathroom. It's almost like a gel you put on it or you can get a razorblade and preform surgery lol

Haha! I have tried the disecting. I can't get enough of the silicone off to get the trim to lift at all. I don't want to try and pry it because the glass my break or chip.

yikes this sounds tuff good luck!

No kidding! I'll be sure and share any do's and don'ts that I learn from tackling this one. At least repairing the stand was a breeze! It took a quart of wood filler and a about 3 days of sanding.

what are you going to replace it with?

I am am going to buy the replacement pieces from the factory or build it from oak. The trim that is on it is in bad shape. It has lots of dents and scratches and a quite a few cracks with about 5 of them causing complete separation. I want to go ahead and take care of it before I set it up and the trim becomes one of those "i'll do it sometime later" projects.

One hour later I have the top trim off. It was as bad as I thought It would be. I still need to take a blade and remove the few pieces of silicon that are left. I used a scraping tool with a 1.5"W x 4"L blade to wedge between the glass and the trim where it hangs down on the outside. I just made a fast and strong prying motion to pull the trim away from the glass. Gloves and safety glasses are a must. the gloves don't just prevent cuts, they also absorb a lot of the shock when it gives. The trim was fairly brittle and broke about a 6' piece off with every snap. You must use quite a bit of force and WANT to break it. I got a pretty good rythm going on the two 4 foot sides. I then went to where one of the cracks in the trim was and pulled it straight up to peel it off down the length of the glass. It broke off in 6" strips and needed occasional help from the scraper to get it started. Sometimes it helped to grab firmly and try and roll it to the outside to break up the silicon a bit.

maybe a chemical bath of some kind would work.

I would be scared that the chemicals would get into the tank seams too. :WHOA:

I had to replace the top frame of my 125 because the center brace broke. I had to use my rotary tool to cut the frame near the corners. I slid a putty knife up under the frame to protect the glass and had to eyeball it on the top. Scary stuff. As I was pulling it up I was just waiting to hear the Plunk sound of breaking glass! I do not want to have to do that job again!
