First I would say use the dustpan method to get most of it. Then take the bell off of the gravel vac & TRY to suck up the sand as if it were fish crap, using just the hose. Causes much higher suction. You will suck up all the sand without taking as much water out with it. If you use a Python, put a bucket in the sink under the outlet to catch the sand. It works, I promise.

:iagree:

I've removed gravel w/ inch & a quarter diameter clear tube & a pillow case attached to the exit end, so I woud prevent a gravel mess. It worked pretty good, the pillow case kept the gravel in & the water went down the drain. I couldn't do it all at once though, not enough water. Just do it in stages.

awesome. thanks for all the great ideas everyone. I think I'm going to go the net route and then siphon out the rest. thanks again!

like everyone has already mentioned, best way would be to use a siphon. Take the top part off and use the hose itself. If you pack it with sand, there will hardly be any water in the bucket. Scooping it out would cause stress on the fish as it creates a big turbulence when scooping IMO
