removing tile/putting in sand in pond questions..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You need a heavy duty pump that can handle the concessional gravel sucked in and do plan for a prefiltration catchment bin to catch the gravel so you can put it back easily. Silica bases ones tend to scratch. Lapis or small pebbles may be better.

Hmm. Dunno if I'd do a switch with an in-tank pump - raising the pump off the floor would presumably have an adverse affect on mechanical filtration (i.e. the heavier crud will probably never find its way up to the filter).

I prolly wouldn't do it unless you changed up your pond to have an overflow with the filter below instead of above and move the pump out of the pond into the sump.

arg...yeah, had a feeling this might not work...would have liked to make this pond more natural for the rays-eventually for breeding...i know this is a silly question, but, are tiles ok for this?

ahh ok...well that's good news then lol...just wanted to try and make it a little more natural you know...I was kind of thinking of doing something like this if I go through with it:
to the far left of the pond I would have prob just about a 50lb bag size of heavy grit sand, working your way right, have a few decent sized river rocks to act as a sand barrier, lastly to the far right-about the last 2 feet or so just empty bottom-wondering if debris would catch in the river stones though-
as you can see I'm still trying to keeping this project afloat! lol
btw I do have a prefilter on my pump- looks exactly like this sitting on the floor:

will that prefilter help any or not really...thanks everyone for the responses especially you pete, sorry to be annoying and asking a million questions lol!

Peace River with the prefilter might well be OK. Not convinced it'd save your impeller from sand although maybe ask that specific question directly in another part of the board?

Sponge will work badly... it will choke within a day. Slightly bigger stainless steel wire mesh cage surrounding the pump will work much better. You will also need to put bigger pebbles that don't fit through the gap of the mesh.

im glad the ray is doing well for you buddy. look if you want i can stop up there like i was saying before and give u some advise on what to do or how to go about it.

for one that supreme pump is a great buy but the prefilter is complete S**T for play sand or sands of that grain size. u could make a plateform for the pump to rest on, or we can figure something out once i can take a look at the setup in person?

i cant wait to c my ray again,

by the way i kinda digg the tile. also asian breeders have been breeding rays on only barebottoms and tile bottoms. they never if anything "rarely" use substrate.

give me a ring one day later this week, we can setup something for me to stop by.

thanks
miguel

lol no prob miguel-uhh ya know, once you got something in your head it sticks there for a while...that's the case here haha
one thing for sure is, i don't know if I want to lift the pump off the floor as it is def doing a great job picking up literally all debris and keeping the pond 95% spotless at any given time...idk we'll think about it i guess ...
yeah i will let you know, tell me what day works for you..
