RENA filstar canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i agree with the above posters, the prime could be more simple...you just hook the quick disconnect back up and wait for it to stop bubbling....then plug it in. I too use the 4 pads in my bottom tray, bio balls and pot scrubbers in my middle rack, and floss in the top. Never replaced anything yet after 6 months, just rinse it out in tank water.

The xp3 holds 2.5 gallons, I think. It's decently large. I take mine to the sink, dump it out, break it down, and rinse the media in the tank water coming out of the python with the tap water. One of the reasons I picked this filter was how easy it is to prime. Theres a valve you lift - lower it when you're done, and it primes itself.

hey thanks for the posts above.
I just started another thread on this filter.
I am getting the XP1 though..not the XP3.
Will all the adivice you guys gave me go to the XP1 too?

Is there any possible ways that a beginner can break this filter?

please check it out if possible..(i should of posted it on this thread..)

Ive never ran the XP1 myself, I do have a couple of XP2s which are the same and since they are all the same design I see no reason why your XP1 would be any diffrent. The only thing I dont like about the filter...is the clamps that hold the motor part onto the chamber of the canister. The 4 clamps I think could use a better more sturdy design so be careful with those. But otherwise they are a breeze to setup and even easier to take care of :)

what's a chamber of a canister? the inside?
are you saying the clamps aren't strong enough to hold the motor?

it will say almost everything i have to know on the manual it comes with right?

Sorry one more thing..would the filter strength get weak if it was around 3 or 4' below the tank?

the filter is easy to use !!!

first chamber is the 4 sponges
second is the bio stars/cermic rings
third is polishing pads (must clean more)

an xp3 has three chambers.. each "box" that you fill with stuff
the clamp is fine to hold the motor. it is just hard to line it up after you take it off to clean it.

yes you should be able to figure it out from the manual

and yes i would not recomend keeping it 3-4' below the tank-but i would not recomend that for any filter.

how low should the XP1 be at? a foot or two below the tank?

have you ever tried it when they are at the same level?

What I refered to as the chamber(lack of better term sorry) was the plastic box composing the "bucket" of the canister itself. The clamps are strong enough to hold it together...I personally could just see a much better design that wouldnt be quite so easy to damage. I have broken a couple of the arms off and had to replace the canister box itself. I ran an XP2 on my 100G which sits on a dresser it was pretty much even with the tank and had relatively no problems with it...other than it was one of the first Renas put on the market which had that air injection crap. Im getting ready to dig out another XP2 and stick on there in the same place this weekend whenever I can motivate myself to do so that is :)

Thanks MCkiller.
I'll get abck to you after I get it
