Rena Filstar xP3 assistance!!! ASAP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Best of luck. Checking out the impeller, kinks, etc as someone else suggested. If it was working before you cleaned, and it won't after put back together, it does sound like something just didn't get back correctly.
I have 3 rena filters, 2 - 4 on different size tanks. One time I cleaned the xp3 out and the motor made a racket. Said a few choice words, pulled it back out, took off the hoses, opened the canister right there and turned the motor upside down, pulled out the impeller... checked the hole, put it back and when I turned it back on, it was just as quiet as always.
Maybe this would be a good experiment for all you other Rena xp owners: take the impeller out, put it back together and see if it makes a noise.

hey, this may sond dumb, but i dont think anyone mentioned it. when you prime the canister make sure the whole canister is empty and the lever up top is UP. unscrew the cap on the intake line and fil it with water (also make sure your intake tubing is underwater). once your line is full of water, push the lever down and your canister should prime right away. wait til the water is done filling, i even rock mine back and forth to make sure all the bubbles are out. if all this was done correctly, and you hear no noise at all, i say something is stuck in your impellar. my rena's are very very quiet, but if the filter is not primed correctly you should hear your impellar rattling around. hope maybe this helped. i know when i first got mine it was a pain to get primed cuz if you do something slightly wrong, it throws everything out of whack!

Thank you everyone for your swift and acurate responses. Everything was fine, the baskets, the media, priming, quick release handle positioning, the works... I just disassembled the unit wiped a few pieces down, had a very long talk with my filter (with the threat of buying a new one and using the old one for target practice) and he fired right up! The spray bar never pumped out fresh water so hard in its life lol!

Another case solved thanks to all my friends at MFK! I <3 you guys! Thanks again everyone!

i hate when it comes down to the ole target practice talk, but sometimes thats the only thing that will get through them! tempramental sob's!!!

xp3 is a sick filter..when mine was new I was new to it...it takes a bit of time to get it all down, but once they go theyre just awesome

Way to go. The siphoning instructions by another poster are the ones included with the rena manual. Makes a looot of noise doing that.
One of the Renas I bought, the first one actually leaked. I tried wiping the area out a bit just in case something had wedged in there, but it continued. The pet store took the filter back, no questions asked.
Other than that, the 3 Renas I have operating do well. The hose fittings that go into the motor itself (the quick disconnect) is designed so that I can actually swap the different size filters around without changing the hoses or anything else.

I know this thread is a tad old, but did the XP3 ever work?
I have 4 of them (1 - 4) and only one of them had a problem: a leak. returned to store with no problem.
