Rena Filstar XP4 Canister Filter

The XP4 advertises to be able to handle 265 gallons. One XP4 isn't enough to handle a 200 gallon? Is there another type of filter system that can handle the load as a stand alone? My only experience is on my 55 and 20 gallon community tanks and I use marineland HOB's on both which has worked well for 3 years now.

I would rather have one large unit working the whole tank.

I have considered turning the 55 gallon into a sump for the 200 with filter pads followed by active carbon followed by bioballs with a 1200 gph pump but honestly I am a little intimidated about building one.

well the FX5 from fluval (hagen) is supose to be the king of canister filters, you might want to look into that, although 200g is alot for one filter to handle,
might want to look at sump type filters

If you have a good intake/output system (to make enough flow) you could get buy with one and a couple of powerheads. I think another good option would be that an a small fluidized bed filter (just google DIY fluidized bed filter, there are some made out of PVC).

It's not that they couldn't handle a 200 gallon tank. But with the way most people stock their tanks and expect the water to be crystal clear. The XP4 just would be able to keep up with the expectations. There is a big difference from filtering a tank and keeping an overstocked tank clear.
