I have a 75 gallon tank standard size with 2 oscars (under6'') an a jack demp (around 5'') with a rena xp3 water looks like crap 3 or 4 days after a water change am i rinsing the foam sponges out to often or do i not have enough media in the compartments? only have the sponges that came with the filter an a bag of carbon an some bio stars only the media that came with the filter not enough to fill all 3 bins any suggestions? An please don't tell me to get a new filter.....

umm.. Add more media.. Or you could change out the carbon. The rena carbon is some of the best IMO . Also fill the bins with filter floss or some ceramic rings.

Strange, i have xp3's on my tank and my water is clearer than crystal.

Did you just setup the tank? If that's the case, could possibly be a bacteria bloom.

i actually recommend taking the carbon out.
friends have told me it leaks into the tank, and i'm sure carbon isn't that necessary.

i run an xp4 and 404 on my 80 gallon and my water looks like something jesus would drink while sitting in his pool in heaven.

my water looks better than jesus' pool's water!

but oscars are messy fish and i just have a pair of barred midas who eat like pigs and poop not as much as you'd think after seeing their eating habits.

if i were you with 2 oscars i'd be doing water changes every 3 or 4 days, 50%.

do you use prime at all? and are you adding anything else to the tank, chemical wise?

You have a really messy group of fish there. I ran two XP filters on my 70G in order to keep it clean.

first remove the carbon. It has been linked to HITH disease and oscars are one of the worst when it comes to getting it. Second like stated before it could be a bacteria bloom. Especially if you are rinsing the media to often. Third cut back on your feeding. this could be a huge factor.

Yeah you only need the carbon if the water is discolored/smelly (I think). But it should not turn the water cloudy if you use it. I know nothing about Oscars, but if Dodge is right I would replace with carbon bag with 20 more bio stars. So run the bottom tray with sponges, middle/top with bio stars.

It sounds like a bacteria bloom though. After rinsing those sponges it happens, least it happens to me (I run a XP3 and a Magnum 350 on my 75gal). Give it a few more days to clear up maybe.

okay so i am using tap water to fill it up like most normal hobbyist do im treating the water with stress coat but thats it. An cloudy water, when i dropped 200+ bucks on a filter irritates me but i have been doing water changes rinsingan cleaning the enitire inside of the filter so that might be one problem i'm causing. I will take out the carbon an add some bio balls or ceramic rings which will pretty much do the same thing? how long will it take for bacteria to bloom if the gravel is rinsed an water temp is around 78 degree's. i'm changing the water every 5 days or so too. like 80 to 90% so is that too much? oh an i only feed once aday enough for them to eat it all it like 2 minutes or less.

change 50% every 5 days and see if that helps. 80-90% is a drastic change and probably not needed unless your water quality is that bad after 5 days. I doubt it though Also feed every other day and see what happens. Unless you're power feeding them to get them bigger they don't need fed every day. in a 75 you might want to slow there growth a little anyway

okay will do an should i still remove the carbon an add bio balls? i have about 20 bio stars i'm not using should i toss those in there for the time being an how often should i be rinsing an cleaning my filter media an stuff an should i give up my jack dempsey my 2 oscars i could never get rid of the jack demp chases them around constantly an it annoys me, any solutions for that while i'm at it?
