Rena XP 3- Any good?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're not bad, but I think they're over rated and over hyped (I have 4 of them)

I have one on my 55, and I think it works great. I also have 2 HOB on it aswell so i really dont know how good it would be by itself.

I agree with Rally on this one. Good price combined with so so preformance add up to a lot of hype.

They have a fairly high return rate according to local shops and are not as simple to set up and operate as other can's in their class. Servacing is also slightly more difficult as is priming.

If I picked any Rena's up in a used tank deal I'd leap on the bandwagon and sell them.

I have two, have had no problems with whatsoever. I would not go with the stock media other then the sponges. I used prefilter ceramic rings eheims ehfisubsrate and seachems matrix in mine. To me they are affordable and work well. I have two eheims 2026 and a 2226 that I am planning on switching out to the rena xp3s.

can't wait to use it on the turtle tank!

this really surprises me.

the rena's are quite famous for their ease of priming (fill it up with water, fill the hoses with water and plug it in). Done.

you can't get any simpler than that as far as priming goes.

I worked at a LFS for years, and we had very few come back, yet sold tons.

In my area at least (ontario) the filter with the highest return rate was the Fluval 04 series. Lots of problems there. Heck, they redesigned the 'aqua-stop' several times at the beginning of the product launch..:(

but the Fluval FX5's are gaining a GREAT reputation it seems.

props to Hagen for that!
