really? it must be different state to state. State farm is the only way to go in most states. Nobody compares in my state. Also trying to get paid if you have a loss with progressive or someone is not nearly as easy as with SF
hmm cant speak about renters/home insurance but the claims process with progressive when my truck was stolen was extremely easy. no hassle at all

There are companies that insure exotic pets. Exotic pets are considered any animal that is not a dog, cat, or farm livestock. However, most of the insurance policies are for supplementing vet care expenses (annual examinations, vaccinations, and 80% of critical care bills).
I did a bit of a search of pet insurers and could not find any companies that support tropical fish. I only found 4 companies that might consider insuring reptiles provided they're expensive to replace and are long-lived. Although, they do require annual vet examinations.

$1,000 per incident.

Whats the deductible? Do they cover water damage? My home owners is going to be renewing in a few months I would switch in a heart beat to not worry about a tank rupture.

I have a love hate relationship with insurance companies, they are good to have when you need them; I don't even mind that I spend money and never use them. What I do mind is when you pay your money for years and finally need them they try to find any way to snake their way out, they are like octopuses they way they can escape from paying.

A good example Travelers insurance, with their flood protection, they wont pay if it doesn't cover two properties or 2 acres. I asked them this example.

Lets say I live on the bottom of a hill and have a hill on both sides, I am in the bottom of a V of hills. If a damn breaks and floods to the roof of my house on my 1 acre of land, and my neigbors who live on top of the hill are not flood, do you pay. They told me no because that's not a flood.

Not sure how reputable these people are.

I own my home and have home owners insurance (contents, fire etc).

I have heard of fish friends of mine paying extra per year to cover extra water damage (if a tank breaks)

however, I have also heard many stories of insurance companies saying they will cover this damage if your aquarium breaks, and then when you file a claim they tell you its your fault you put the tank there and we are not covering this damage..

because I think you will find it near impossible to find an insurance company that has any specific language that refers to 'aquariums' in their policies.

so when you come time to file the claim, they tell you its not covered and your on your own..

I would like to hear from some fellow Canadians (esp. Ontario) to see if they have any info...

Yes see this is what I am talking about, I always ask two reps, the first one said yes that it's covered but the second one told me it wasn't; so I asked a third and was told it wouldn't be covered. Only thing I am covered for water damage wise is pipe rupture. SO I have my tank in the basement next to the bath room by a floor drain.

Home owners insurance covers aquarium floods. It will cover acts of ignorance.

Not all policies, you should always assume its not covered unless you know it is. My example of the flood when having so called "Flood" Insurance is a good example. I will be call Progressive for a quote this week. But I want something in actual writing.

Edit: They never say what type of pipe I have a drain pipe connected directly to the tank and then directly to the main drain of the house. In my opinion that is a pipe thats part of the house plumbing.

most insurance companies will fight NOT to honour such a claim.

thats where the insurance companies make their money - by NOT honouring claims that we all have been paying for..

if they can get away with not covering you, they will do that..

Flood insurance is for floods that happen from the outside in, you do not need flood insurance if the flood is from the inside out.

My wife flooded our house with the bathtub, and it was covered under home owners policy. I have a friend that was painting a house and spilled the paint on the carpet and made a home owners claim, if you have a good policy with a good carrier, they will cover floods from aquariums

I understand that, the talk about flood insurance was to show how sneaky these people are. However there is water damage policies you can get, for pipe ruptures, I know because I had to get one for my finished basement.
