Replacing fx5 with eheim 2180?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1.Could you enlighten me on how i can setup the fx5 properly. I have 3 and 1 constantly has microbubbles, i have cleaned it and tried different media and it still gets the same result.

Probably a loose hose connected somewhere in the system, I had the same problem for a week then I realized where it bends that I didn't have the hose pushed far enough in the gromet rubber sleeve. Took it all apart soaked all the male and female ends under hot water then I connected them and it was much easier to get the fittings in all the way.

2. Is my tank overstocked? I have three 8" cichla, one 6" oscar, and a 8" motoro ray.

3. So would a classic be the way to go?

4. Not worried about maintence and a sump is not going to happen on this tank it is not drilled, and i dont understand them.

3. If you are serious about dropping some cash, check out eheim 2262. It cost 389 these days empty and it will cost probably another $100-$150 to fill it up. It has three times the media capacity as an fx5...you could replace the fx5 with bubbles with it and get a large boost in your filter capacity.

As far as overstock, if you don't detect ammonia in your tank water, you are not overstocked filter wise.

make sure the connections inside the tank are under water, and also some some vaseline on the lid o-ring i know that has helped alot of people including myself, and make sure the intake isnt anywere near air bubbles... make sure your hose connections are good and tight as well, it getting air in somewere tho, ya just have to find the culpret :)

To bad to spend the extra $$$ if a solution can be found with your current FX5? How old is it (warranty left?). Seems to me your current setup must be nice. I would kill for a tank like that:drool:. Granted the FX5 isn't perfect but it's a good filter, I'd work to see if Hagen could not help me out....who knows could be a $15.00 gasket? I know this dosn't solve your problem with the Microbubbles but almost any problem has a solution. I've been wanting a 2080 or 2262 and have kept myself under control by saying to myself that I am lucky to have what I've got. Then again if the money is there?

Yes, yes and yes...........................

Id stick with the eheim classic. Get a 2262 (used if money is tight) and call it a day. 5 gallon bucket of bio media with a 900gph pump. You'll thank me later lol

Eheim should send me a check as I promote their stuff all the time..... on the other hand I have no experience with the non-classic filters. I run an inline hydor heater on mine to keep the heater out of the tank
