Replacing top frame on a bowfront

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow, 3/8" thick glass on a 33" tall? I would be very leary of putting expensive fish in the tank and especially leary of putting the tank anywhere but the garage. That thing should be 1/2" minimum.

Yea, I always thought 3/8 for under 24" and 1/2 for under 30". I went back out to double check and it is 1/2", but 33" is still a long vertical joint.

The reseal was an easy job. Old silicone came right off and cleaned up with alcohol. I masked it and put on a super thick bead. I did it on Friday, but will probably wait until Wednesday to test it.

All seems to be well with the tank. It had been 5 days so I filled the tank today and it is holding tight. The black background is looking great too! I am going to let it sit a few more days and then move her in.:headbang2

Thanks, I am relieved.

The entire east coast around Norfolk was closed today due to an ugly storm so I decided to bring the tank in. It took most of the day and I am not entirely sure what I think about it yet. It looks a bit stupid tall in the house. The pictures really don't convey how large it is. I know Kate is not all that thrilled about it. I have a 125 and 180, but with the height this looks much more commanding. I am looking forward to finishing it up and getting the fish back in.

Well the saga continues. Razor blading the top off was nothing compared to razor blading the paint off of both of the sides. The top came off fairly easy by just pulling with my fingers, no tools required. With the top off it revealed a large chip on one top side and a smaller chip on the other. Arrrgh.

I am am having doubts about the tank. It appears to have been resealed once already.

The top should come in tomorrow so we will see what happens. My fingers are certainly crossed.

Where you order top from?

You will probably not get a response as the OP hasn't been on here since 2011.

You may want to check with your Local Fish Store or if you know the tank manufacturer on their website.
