Depending what species you have this might or might not work for you. I like to use these terracotta watering spikes for my plecos, mind you they're just ancistrus and L200's and a few smaller Hypans. They are inexpensive and you can find them online or maybe your hardware store.

I found these: these and wondering if they are tank safe https://www.reptilesupplyco.com/wholesale-reptile-hides-shelters/2964-grapevine-hide-lg-lugarti.html

Any other affordable ideas? Large pleco 5” going from substrate to bare bottom tank
I use a reptile hide for my larger plecos - I believe it’s ceramic. It has leached all the paint off but all the fish are healthy and fine. It went from painted like a log to near white - it was sold as tank safe as well.

+1 to the watering stakes, this guy is about 4.5inches and loves these.

Any other type like mopani or Malaysian. What kind of pleco?
I have mopani which hasn't broken down at all in 6 months despite being a food staple for 3 plecos and grape wood that flaked gross fungus even the snails ignored and shredded, clogging the impeller on the filter. Looks great now. The plecos spots correspond to the color of the wood they shlurp on.
