Reptile Keepers Have It Made

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So you think. You get a couple enclosures, a couple snakes of different sizes and you think you're set.
Then you have to feed them.
So, you buy your mice or rats from your local supplier. Maybe the snakes or lizards you bought won't eat frozen, so you have to buy live.
But then sometimes, they don't eat them. Then what do you do with the mouse or rat?
Then you set up an enclosure for them.
After a while you realize buying rats and mice is expensive. It's much cheaper to buy rat and mouse food. Aha!
Then you set up a breeding colony and you always have the size and numbers you need.
But, you know what? Breeding mice and rats sucks. Getting tired of fish tank maintenance? That's NOTHING compared to how much work rats and mice take, how much they stink, how freaking brutal mice really are.
At least fish tank maintenance is relaxing and doesn't smell like piss.
Just saying yo.
Yuuup. Been there, done that.

Fish swim around, school, fight, defend territory, woo each other, breed, care for babies... AND they are pretty. Most fish in your average LFS can be kept in 20g with a HOB, no light and dechlorinated tapwater. Some you can keep in a 5g.
Reptiles (and mammals) are expensive, smell bad, and most of the time sit still. I had a turtle for a while, and I gave him to a woman who was very happy to take him. I had fun, and for the first day, they are more fun then fish, but it just really either sat in the water with its nose out, or in the heat lamp. BORING. (you also need a filter, and a lot more waterchanges then for fish.) Most reptiles are like this. Mammals like guinea pigs are just as boring, but they are noisy and stink too.
Also you are forgetting the exotic and often live food you need, and how often you have to change bedding/water.
If you want low maintenance and cheap, collect posters.

I'm going to be a temporary reptile keeper as of tomorrow, at least for a few weeks. My Niece has all sorts of animals from dogs to cats, fish, turtle, birds, had a hedge hog, so for Christmas this year I am getting her a Crested Gecko. Been working on setting the tank up for it for the past week and the local shop just got a baby dalmatian crested in yesterday so I'm headed to pick it up tomorrow. So for the next 3 weeks I guess I'll be a reptile foster dad lol

That’s cool, are you going to scape it with some of your fancy designs

You guys are forgetting that aquatic reptiles are much more difficult than most if not all fish......water, basking for most, a land area to lay eggs....I would argue Caiman are smaller and slower growing than many fish kept on this site yet you would need 30K to build an enclosure for one. My Mata Mata turtle as an adult will be far more challanging to keep than a similar sized red tailed catfish.....just saying.

No, I mean certain monitor lizard species.
I figured.....just poking the crowd for underestimating reptlie keeping...I have kept many snakes and lizards. They range in care tremendously. My daughter has a ball python she got when she was 12. Simple. Her new Hedgehog is a bit more challanging...she is 15.( obvioulsy not a reptile) I am not committed to reptiles enough to donate a room to one but I appreciate those that do. I must say keeping any type of Croc or Gator is nuts.
