Reptile Keepers Have It Made

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I figured.....just poking the crowd for underestimating reptlie keeping...I have kept many snakes and lizards. They range in care tremendously. My daughter has a ball python she got when she was 12. Simple. Her new Hedgehog is a bit more challanging...she is 15.( obvioulsy not a reptile) I am not committed to reptiles enough to donate a room to one but I appreciate those that do. I must say keeping any type of Croc or Gator is nuts.
Yeah, and I could make do with some of the smaller reptiles that could be kept in good sized tanks such as tegu and gila monsters to name a few that I like....my problem is my wife who has imposed a ban on lizards in the house as she is terrified of them lol.

I’ve only just got back into reptiles, but it’s already more expensive then any one of my fish tanks.
Granted we have bought almost everything new, so that right there costs significantly more then I’ve spent on tanks.
Comparing both in my situation.....

Food will be a bit more over time unless I start breeding colonies.
Not only does my specific rep need all the regular filter/heater/light, but also a basking area. That means more space and more electric cost to run an extra lamp.
And like fish, reps are addictive...... haha.
And unlike a lot of fish a good number of reps can’t be housed together. So that means separate tanks/enclosures for each one.
I know not all reps need this much care, and plenty of fish need more care then this. It’s really hard to compare the two because there is so much diversity.

We have a sulcatta tortoise. It has an 8'×8' enclosure atm and will soon just have most of the room along with my sump and puffers tank and my 15 year old cornsnake. The tortoise is about 18" in diameter and weights 48lbs. It gets fed a large salad everyother day in total it eats 6 heads of romain 2 commercial boxes of spring mix 3lbs of carrots a bunch of bananas couple head of broccoli and a few other odds and ends weekly. The room is kept at 82f with a space heater and it has basking spots, also has to have lights capable of producing uva and uvb and vitamin supplements. Now the cornsnake is probably what the op is talking about but in the realm of reptile keeping thats like keeping very basic fish.

That’s cool, are you going to scape it with some of your fancy designs

I was planning on doing a 3d background for the tank, but decided against it now. Mainly because the backgrounds/silicone takes a little while to off-gas. With Christmas only about 3 weeks away I wanted to make sure I got the Gecko a few weeks ahead of time so I could make sure it was healthy and doing well before giving it to her. So didn't want to chance putting the little guy in and risking it's health, and didn't want to chance waiting too long and missing out on getting one in time. So just took a spare 29g I had layin' around and painted the back dark brown and the floor light tank. Gonna pick up some branches and fake plants and such for it today and make him a nice little simple home for the time being. Then later on if she wants a nicer setup I'll do her a background for it.

Awesome and brilliant by Jean Paul. Thanks for sharing:grinyes:
Dude you arent kidding! I wonder what Jean Paul does for a living? I know he did alot by himself but the upkeep alone has gotta be close to what I make a year....lol
Not to mention the cost of building and all the reptile amphibians and fish in there.

I dont like hosts that call you pet names though. Im not sure about him.

I have been looking to get back into lizards. When I was a teenager I had two lizards (false chameleon and a baskalisk) till I joined the Army and gave them to my friends.
Now talking enclosures, reptiles can definitely be done cheaper than a fish.
If going small then its about the same really. Where reps pull ahead is large enclosures. Like mentioned can use non water tight fish tanks or even build your own for way cheaper than getting big tanks for big fish. I priced out all the materials to build one myself (4x4x8ft) and it was way under two bennies. You can't even but a new 75gal for under two hundred.

Looking at food I am guessing about even maybe. The one I wants brumates so will only have to feed it for half the year. Also some of the food can cross over for both (crickets, worms, roaches, tilapia, shrimp)
