Reptiles that don't need live food.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks already red that care sheet. Im going to uvb for it.

In 1.75 years my Argentinean Black & White Tegu has grown to 40" @ 6 lbs without ever once eating live food...

Most cariverous animals can be trained to eat ground turkey, ground beef, liver, etc, etc... as well as utilizing frozen/thawed mice/rats...

The general "rule of thumb" is nocturnal reptiles do not require UV-B and duirnal (daytime active) reptiles do...

Are there any types of iguanas that grow smaller than the green but are still tameable like a green?

Arg Tegus generally top out between 3~4' and (IME) are far more tamable than Iguanas...

Most full adult Iguanas I've known have been rather moody... Arg Tegus are very easy to tame and are often puppy like...

You have the smaller Ctenosaura iguanas but thouse are hard to tame and they cost a pretty penny. But other Ctenosaura except C. similis are a bit smaller then greens and can be tamed but all of this igs tend to be more jumpy and unpredictable then greens. You also have desert iguana and chuckwallas wich are very similar to Uromastix regarding care, and the owesame solomon islands tree skink wich is herbivorus but also very expensive.

Ive been looking at the argentina black and white tegu. Looks pretty easy to take care of and awesome. How much do these run for at an expo for a baby? I realize that they get big but I can make an enclosure pretty easily. Also do these guys like to climb? Ive been researching and some enclures for them or tall like a iguana cage and some are not.

This are walkers mainly, not climbers and need alot of space, preferably outdoors. Be aware that they get really BIG and even if they have a good temper they can still inflict a very powerfull bite.

Ill still think about them, but do you know any other good reptiles that are bigger and can be easily tamed? Iguanas can inflict powerful bites to right? I want an animal that is very personable.

I had a green Iguana for 5~7 years when I was a teenager/young adult… I handled it nearly everyday for several years and when doing so it became quite tame. As it got close to 5’ it became much more bold and less willing to be handled.

A close friend has a young adult (2.25 years old) Savannah Monitor and it is very “personable”, but not very “handle able”… It responds to people well and appreciates being let out to free roam. It doesn’t “run” from people but it will not be handled unless it wants to be.

My Tegu, at 1.75 years old and 40”, is the friendliest reptile I’ve over owned/seen.

They are “terrestrial” meaning ground dwelling. So their enclosure would not be benefited by mimicking the canopy of the rainforest, but mine climbs up/on/over stuff plenty.

A large/proper enclosure is essential in keeping any large pet happy. If it is improperly housed it will be constantly stressed and is likely to display that stress to you. If it is properly housed and cared for it is far more likely to be ‘friendly’ toward you…

Before I suggested keeping a Tegu to anyone I would encourage them to seriously consider the responsibility of keeping a large reptile that will live many years (15~20)… but I would highly suggest a Tegu to anyone who feels they can meet the requirements of such an animal…

I paid $150 for my baby Arg Tegu from Bobby Hill (Tegutalk.com). Be cautious buying one at an expo as I’ve seen Columbian (Black & Gold) Tegus sold as Arg (Black & White) Tegus many times… and these two animals are worlds apart in temperament…

really thinking about the tegu, how would i tell the difference between the two?
