Rescue Cichlid ID, I’m stumped

where do you think a guy whose stuffing all those cichlids into a 36 gallon tank is going to get a Cuban or other more “exotic” cichlid? Doesn’t stoke me as the type to order from TUIC or Cota.... probably some kind of pet smart peacock or other

My first impression was stressed out, subordinate male Cuban (N. tetracanthus)
There are location variants that are more or less spotted, more or less blotchy.
Could be that someone bought a group, with the intention of ending up with a pair, and dumped the extras at a LFS.
The variant I kept were more blotchy, but similar, and the one below is much older and larger, maybe 10+".

Eh, Cubans aren't that rare anymore. In my city (140k pop) there are two people breeding Cubans. They have so many, the local aquarium shops sell them small ones for $3 if they will take them at all.

interesting. In my city, similarly sized, there is no one with them, and the local fish stores aren’t very interested in anything more “exotic” than blood parrots, flower horns or for the traditionally inclined carpintis. Im 4 hours and change from Tampa, so it’s not like they can’t get them. I wonder what the OPs town is like. Then we will have a sample of 3 cities from which we can extrapolate the relative rarity or commonality of Cubans etc. Haha.

So I’m on Long Island, not that far out of New York City, people have shown me all sorts of fish that they have, there’s a pretty good assortment of fish that we can bring in that I am sometimes genuinely surprised about, there are other stores within a half hour of me where I can find almost any sort of aquatic animal that I’ve seen online for sale, and somehow people think it’s a good idea to show me, a LFS employee, all their cool things that they are 100% not legally allowed to have ?, just like in the public store on their phones loudly exclaiming about their Asian arowana or snakeheads or pirhanas (which aren’t legal here) all while I’m just like “you know, people from fish and wild life do come in here so how about you do us both a favor and stop it”

So suffice to say, I feel like anything could be an option on the table LOL

Looks Cuban. Definitely at least a Cuban dominate hybrid. And I agree with the others...different areas have different resources and availability. Recently on even tuic they referred to a butterikoferi as rarely available . Down here in north Florida you can’t give fry away.
