"Rescue" cichlids from Petsmart...what are they??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He is "rescuing" them from the terrible care that alot of PetSmart's tend to give.
hello; so it is a traditional buy/sell relationship at a commercial store? For some reason I had a different idea of the term "rescue". I took in a large pleco from a neighbor who was losing their house a few years ago. It was my taking the fish or it was to die.

As to the point of PetSmart fish care, I have purchased a number of fish from them. I find the fish to survive well and to be in decent shape. I have seen fish from numerous other shops that were in not such good condition. Maybe I am lucky in having two of their stores in my general area that are run well?

if he scored some brasiliensis from petsmart then he hit the jack pot haha. I've never seen brasiliensis at any fish store in my area.

there a cheap cichlid lfs "staple" imo lol... i can get em $8.00 a pop at petsmart and other chain stores.

Dang. That's crazy. When I worked at one of the lfs here, they were never on the order list.

Ive never seen anything over than oscars, jack Dempseys, convicts and fire mouths at our local petsmarts.

I used the term rescue because the six of them were in a 10x10x10" cube with a half dozen Jewels and several small bichirs. Two of them were hanging in the corners of the tank and are very beat up, but have seemed to quickly acclimate to my tank.

I think the brasiliensis guess is a good one and was what I was hoping. I rarely see Geo's in our area and if I do they are certainly not $5 like these guys were!

They are in a 92g corner which is a pretty tall tank and never get more than 6-8" off the bottom. Feeding is mostly them picking at pellets on the sand that were missed by their tankmates.

Petsmarts tend to be better in most, but they vary greatly store to store in my experience. Most of our local chain stores are terrible.

I could see it, side by side they definitely look like them. The size should be an indicator relatively quickly too.

And as far as the whole PetSmart thing. I've found that with all those, PetSmart, Petco, Petsupermarket, ect ect. It seriously depends on who is running their fish department. I travel all over for my job and I enjoy going into different petshops to look at fish where ever I am. They can be night and day. The Petsupermarket by me takes excellent care of their fish and always has different exciting species in. Where as the Petsupermarket about 30-40 minutes from me is a wasteland for fish. To the point where I have two Petco's by me. Literally 15 minutes apart from each other. One the fish are terrible, ick ridden, and overstocked. And the other is fairly decent.

But back to the subject. Good score on 5$ Geo's . I hope they turn out to be stunners for you. Update us down the road.
