Rescued Fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow, Warrenda, you have a BIG fish family. Do you have any pics posted of them? :) I'm especially curious about the angel fish with the blue trailers.

Will take some pics tomorrow. The angel I got when he was very small same as a lot of the rescues. I couldn't have imagined that he would turn out so nice. Pics in the morning.

Im a sucker lol

I have quite a few and I actually have a "special needs" thank setup. Rescued a stunted common pleco that was living in a 60 gallon mbuna setup and has put on a ton of size in both our 210 and 300. Have both a Freddy and a Borleyi that are going blind for different reasons. The Freddy most likely due to age and the Borleyi because of extreme nitrates in tank that was left unkept after a fellow fish keeper passed away. Borleyi is making a comeback and is being socialized once again with other cichlids.

Done it several times and will continue to do it.

1. Frontosa from Petsmart....the little guy's color was all gray from stress....bought him. He is around 5" now.
2. Mpimbwe Frontosa (trio) --- got them as I was going to purchase a peacock from this guy. Whew, in a 75 gallon tank, it seemed like he had a hundred fish in that tank. The Frontosa's were in there with some of the meanest mbunas. Offered him good money so he will give it up, accepted. They are now 5-6".
3. Electric Blue Ahli with a crooked mouth. Bought him as I knew unlikely he will find a new home. He is now 6-7" and doing well.

I rescued a 10" Oscar from a 30 gallon 18"x18"x18" cube tank had to buy the tank too, but he's happy in my 120 now with some Severums

rescued a senegal bichir from a LFS the owner originally had 2 and as the weeks went on and I kept coming in I saw the condition of both deteriorate. I asked the owner what he was feeding him and he said flakes, because they will eat what come to the bottom. Knowing I had no space to take one in I waited to see if someone would buy them. After about another week I saw one of them dead with the corpse in the tank being picked apart by the other one. I bought the little guy and brought him home at a small .5"-.75" I nursed him to a healthy 1.5"-2" with careful feeding of bloodworms and brineshrimp. After about a month he had regained full health and was a monster when it came to eating time. After about 6 months he went from .5"-.75" to about 6-7" and very fat. He passed away a few months ago unfortunately, but he will never be forgotten.

I rescued a large Oscar, probably pushing 10" who had been kept in a 35g tank his entire life. Surprisingly he had no noticeable defects and now happily dominates a 125g tank in my bedroom :)

Does anyone here have any rescue fish? I'm not sure if that's an actual thing, but I did have a couple way back when. For those of you that missed my introductory post, I once had a tiger oscar that I rescued from a bad situation. He was located in a classroom and the kids were just horrible with him. His tank was filthy, and kids would routinely put chunks of soap in the water, they would also chase and poke him with their pencils. I'm not sure how he survived, but the teacher was going to kill him because he kept eating all the other fish that were put in the tank, so I took him in. My previous experience with fish was basically just goldfish and betta, so I knew nothing of this species. He started off in a 20 gallon that was way too small for him, and within a few weeks I purchased a 75 gallon. He was pretty old when I got him, about 8, and I had him for another 2-3 years before he passed. He was such an entertaining fish, he would follow me around the room from inside his tank, and would interact with me. I mourned when he died like I've mourned for past cats.

My betta before him was a rescue as well, the owner was going to flush him because she wanted other fish instead, so I took him. What are your experiences with rescued fish?

This story mad me sad.

Recently picked up a ctenopoma that was in a tank of firemouths at a crappy LFS. They do dumb things like put plecos, gar and bichir in the same tank where the plecos noticeably chase the others. Picked up a senegal that way when i first started, he made it to 6-7 inch then died of bloat like a lot of senegals do, great fish. Had a similar situation more recently but w/ bala sharks, and he was beaten worse then the first. He unfortunatley didnt recover fully, i think he had internal damage and died. The ctenopoma was being picked on hxc so i picked him up, his tail is split and a piece of his jaw is missing.

I have rescued other peoples fish by taking the aggressor also, my orino pbass was beating on everything else in friends tank so i took him in. Hes about 4-5 inch now looks great
