Hello all. I recently rescued a huge male and smaller egg laying female midas from a LFS that some owner dropped off. They had been there for about 6 months and In a dirty 75 gallon. The male is around 13"+ and female is about 7" they looked very unhappy so i offered the owner $40 and took them home. They seemed healthy enuff to put in my 265g and being midas they wouldnt get picked on. I was right. Lol.

The problem is that they both have an issue with floating. Its like they cannot sink, they swim around at the very top of the water so much so even their dorsal fins are sticking out of the top of the water. The male chases other fish away like a spunky midas would but floats back to the top. Its like they are too buoyant. They look like bobbers almost they seem a little reclusive but otherwise healthy. Anyone seen this before? I havent.

If theyre eating, feeding them boiled deshelled peas may help. Swim bladder problems are usually either constipation relationed, or the root can be a bacterial infection. Melafix would be my choice on a first med.

I had a fish do that from stress. It eventually cleared up after about 2 weeks. Maybe it was the change of food or that they probably weren't eating much in the LFS and then they gorged when you got them home. I read somewhere that brine shrimp will make fish poop a lot.

Might also be that they swallowed air during transport and this affects their buyoncy ( arowanas are prone to that ).

Up the temps and add some aq salt in there and do not feed for a couple of days.

Thanks i suspected swim bladder. They have not eaten for me yet. Ive fed the tank hikari bio gold and massivore and they didnt seem interested. Ive turned up the heat and added an extra air stone as well. I watch rhem try to swim down for cover under the wood and they seem to struggle to get down there and then float right back to the top. Should i go with melafix or some type of medication? Right before i got them i did a 40% water change and cleaned my filteration i only have 20ppm nitrates so i feel like my water is good...temp is around 78F and i only feed this tank once every 3 days

Epsoms salt also works for swimbladder. Cant remember the exact dosage off the top of my head. You can soak their food in water with epsoms salt. With the peas you may have to force feed. Good luck with them they are definatly gonna be alot happier now.
