rescued skinny pleco, feeding advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never said non-tropical, I suppose I should clarify. I was under the impression they did best in sub-typical temperatures, under 71.

Don't forget that common plecos are NOT tropical fish and he will do better without heat.

Oh now it makes sense. Thanks for the clear explanation...

I would leave him in the smaller tank for about 14 days just to be on the safe side and to let him get a head start on eating. They love sweet potato and it will fatten it up if it takes to it .

He is still alive. Eating wise isnt 100% what I put in, but he gets it 70% of the time. Still sits by his driftwood but last night he was hanging on the side of the glass, women says she has seen him swimming about during the day. He looks better, not as skinny but still has those white spots/marks on him, probably a ammonia burn from his original location. He poops a good amount so thats all that matters.

All is well with this guy, eats eats and eats. As you can see he is a poopin machine in his 75gal. Tough guy he is, I as others thought he was gonna be a goner. Heres to a long happy life!

keep in mind common or sail fin pleco get up to 18" to 24", 55g will not do, and they are poop machines, they eat what ever, they are omnivores, plant, animal makes no dif to a common pleco, mine scarf shrimp as will as peas, cucumber or pleco chips. they need wood to rasp on, mine are always sculpting there wood when not feeding. temps need to be 76 or higher, they can be very personable fish, can hand feed them and will rasp your fingers, they do not like to be petted.

There is plenty of wood in their with him, enough to munch on for 50 years. Tank size isnt a problem. 240gal is right next to the 75. 240 one day will be a 1500gal+. As they grow I build bigger.

:)

I actually think he doesn't look too bad. When plecos are really knocking on death's door, their eyes get sunken in. That's a sign that they're starving. And his look OK. I think you should be able to fatten him up. Go buy some cucumber or squash, he'll probably dig that more than potato (which might not be great for them---it's related to tomato, and therefor is in the nightshade family) and he should be OK in time.
