Resealing a 2nd hand 55g-worth it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A reseal wouldnt hurt and is not too difficult a job. You dont have to take the tank apart which would entail removing the silicone holding the panels together, but just remove all the silicone on the inside seams and lay new silicone in its place.

It is cyber monday week though, you might be able to find a brand new 55 for next to nothing if you dont want to do the work.

Reseal vs Rebuild. If your tank is currently holding water a rebuild would be a bit overkill. How old is the tank. You can definitely do a reseal quite easily at this point, much easier then years from now with a stocked tank you have to rehome for the process.

honestly i would not even leak test it , just strip old silicone and reseal it .. dry it out 48-72 hours then test it ..
Ive always got tanks from craigslist for cheap ($20 for 90 gall) cleaned resealed and it works ;-)

Looks ok to me. But I always test fill used tanks, on whatever stand they are going to be on, in my garage. I just leave them filled for weeks out there sometimes. If your that worried though I'd keep looking. I picked four tanks on craigslist as a group buy for $40. A 75 gallon, 55 gallon, 40 breeder, and a 20 tall. $10 each. They're now all in use.

I got a 55g second hand recently from someone who abandoned their aquarium. I don’t know how it is. The silicon is still in pretty good condition. But that’s where I hit a decision. The bottom right corner has a sort of glob of silicon that’s been pushed and lifted slightly. All other pieces look fine. (In the photo it’s the piece that looks thicker than the rest).
I thought they I should reseal it. However I read an article (can’t link it here) about how you should absolutely *not* reseal an aquarium. Because it would require the removal of all of the silicon. Including inbetween the glass panels. And it ends up being too risky. Because if you fail to get off every bit of silicon and realign each glass panel *exactly* the tank will separate over time. I’m very worried about leaks as I live in an apartment. I can’t leak test either because I own no sort of basement area. I have a porch but it’s cold where I live and I worry about the weather stressing the glass.

what would my best bet be? Risk the reseal or risk the potentiallyView attachment 1396761 compromised silicon.
that shouldn't be an issue if it holds water..lt's just a manufacturers blem by the looks..
