I need to reseal my whole tank with silicon what silicon should i use? any advice when i take the sealant off and reseal it? I would like to do this on my first shot. Please help Thanks in advance.

GE 2 without the bioseal is what i use. Whatever you use, make sure it is 100% siicone and that it doesn't have mold inhibitors. The silicone comes in clear, grey, black and maybe some other colors too.

Get some straight razors and cut out the old stuff completely. Use rubbing alcohol or vinegar to help remove and to wipe it clean when done.

When it is clean and dry apply silicone and wipe with finger or a smoothening tool (i cut pieces off of a 20oz plastic bottle). For the vertical seams you can tape it off so it will be uniform, but make sure to remove it right after you seal it.

No, clamping the tank isn't neccesary. You don't want to touch the silicone that holds the glass together, just whats inside the tank.

Do you have any pictures of the split? If the silicone IN the tank is splitting its fine. If the glass is coming apart, then you have a problem lol.

When you look through the glass where the 2 pieces meet, you can see the silicone in there. Sometimes you will see small bubbles that's ok, if it looks like it is damaged, gone, or split like you said, then i would say the tank has to come apart.

I purchased the tank used. and it looks like he went up the side wall on one side of the tank. What confuses me is that he went up both sides on inside and out. every other side is perfect with no bubbles or anything. Im just thinking of taking the silicone from the bottom all the way up the side walls and just redoing it with GE2 clear and letting it sit. its an older tank thats about 1/2 inch thick glass.

Funny i just did the same thing. I bought an old 125 1/2" glass and one corner is all chipped and had silicone all over it inside and out. I am going to assume in both cases that they sprung a leak, and drained the tank partially and did a quick repair.

I just got done resiliconing mine a few days ago, I will probably leak test it tonight. Sounds like we are in the same boat except i used black silicone and painted the back and sides black too. The tank is old and has hard water stains i can't remove, painting it helped a lot and i also siliconed some outside corners that were chipped. Everything is so black you cannot even tell anymore :D.

Have you tested this tank for leaks?

I hear silicone doesn't stick to silicone, but i have cut out just a vertical seam before and redid it with success. Cut it flush near the bottom, but not too low to mess with bottom seal. Make sure all silicone is gone on the seam, then redo it. Let it sit a few days then leak test.

The silicone on the outside isn't doing anything, just scrape that off and start fresh.

Well isnt that funny. we both got the same tanks lmao. Well i filled it up about half way today to clean walls. the tank came out beautiful everything scraped right off the bottom is scratched ofcourse (quite bad) but the sides are very good. It didnt seem to leak at all the ground seemed dry underneath. I used my gravel vac to drain the tank. Im going to reseal the whole tank though because this idiot used half clear half black to it looks so stupid its not even different sides its like 1 side is mixed with black and clear and looks so dumb. I will reseal the tank tomorrow and hopefully leak test the tank tuesday or wensday. After i reseal the tank is it a bad idea to move the tank around? The guy kept telling me when you move the tank it screws up all the silicone is that true?
