Researching potential hystrix for my 180g

I'm not sure I completely agree on the pleco must come out. There are several ray keepers that keep plecos with rays. I'm not saying there is no risk, in fact, if a small ray is introduced one night is all it would take if the pleco wanted to attack/harass the pup to death. Not sure on your plecos temperment as some can get very territorial and agressive others could care less. Alot of it depends on size of the tank, if it gets enough food, and temperment. I would however error on the side of caution. Plecos have killed rays. They are like an armored tank with teeth.

I have a hystrix in a 300 with 2 plecos and a whole lot of fish..... No problems here i feed the ray by hand or tongs to make sure it eats good because the other fish tend to steal the food before he can get to it..... I would say try it but keep ur eyes on it for awhile to make sure it isnt getting picked on......

I've had plecos with rays in the past. The plecos can be doing fine for months and then all of a sudden will attack the rays' disks like it's candy. Persistant bastards. Same experience with flagtails. Once they get the taste, there's no looking back.

I had heard about the ray vs pleco issue. I'm not sure how my pleco would be. He gets plenty of fresh veggies, algae, pellets. His temperament seems decent enough. Heck, I even do a 50-75% water change weekly to make up for him fouling the tank.

I was hoping to be able to make it work but it sounds like I need to wait still. One day gosh darnit! I'm not going to risk the pup's life just so I could have one. :(

One weekly water change won't cut it if you added a ray to your system.

If you are going to get a hystrix ray I would advise getting a male as they do not get as big as a female. a lot of people tend to over look this but a male hystrix rarely get an 11" diameter disk. Get the pleco out and eveything should be good. You will need to monitor the tank for a month or so, sometimes cichlids get a little fiesty toward rays as well.

Thanks digger. I might end up doing that but we shall see. I was definitely leaning towards a male if I were to get one.
