Researching stingrays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why is that?

With all due respect, if you are still unaware of just how difficult they can be, then more research is needed. Not meant as a put down, but rather trying to save you an expensive learning moment.

Simply put, they need massive enclosures and massive filtration systems. Ammonia and nitrite HAVE to be ZERO at all times. Water has to be kept perfect with ZERO slip ups.

If you can master perfect chemistry with no fluctuations and feed them the foods they have to be fed in the massive quantities they require without it touching your water quality, then they are easy.

However, keeping parameters in check is a lot easier said than done. My system changes about 230 gallons of water a day, and I have a huge sump running 4500GPH and I still do water changes every few days

I had my first stingray in a 3 feet ?. Never knew what tank sizes they needed and I was just beginning fishkeeping. Never knew this site. My 2nd and 3rd ray were also in the 3 feet. My biggest mistake in fishkeeping. They obviously died. My fourth ray was was in a 6ft, but died to an unknown cause. Hence the ray I have now, I’m going to try my best to grow it. Damascus is right, they require perfect parameters and large aquariums. They produce huge amounts of ammonia and require large water changes weekly.

My question was based on your response to my post, not based on my understanding of keeping rays. As stated in my OP, at ray tank is probably at least 2 years away. This isn't my first tank, and I'm not a 16 yr old kid who does things on a whim because they look cool. Your condescending response was neither warranted nor appreciated. The thread is titled "Researching stingrays". That in and of itself should suggest to the casual observer that I realize there is a lot I still need to learn and am seeking information. Also since the post says the tank is at least a couple of tanks away because of other projects, I am giving myself adequate time to prepare myself. Pompous rantings from someone basking in their delusions of self grandeur is what drives people away from reaching beyond their grasp and achieving new goals. Perhaps you should take more consideration when responding to threads. If you can't provide assistance without being judgemental or supercilious, perhaps you should stay out of the conversation. "With all due respect".

What makes Damascus right? From your post you made uninformed decisions and 3 rays possibly perished because of it. I don't buy any fish without first knowing as much as I can about it and what it takes to keep it. This page should be about assisting each other in taking our fish keeping to the next level, not demeaning commentary followed by self proclamations of greatness. i.e look at what I have.

C Cichlid savage II Seriously? The thing that makes Damascus right is the fact that Damascus IS right. if you did as much research as you say you do you would already know that

So far you are the only person that has been demeaning.

Again the assumption is made that I didn't know that. I asked some very specific questions. None of which were answered.

C Cichlid savage II I dont feel like arguing but I suggest you take all the advice you can get from these people who have experience with rays. Not to mention they are taking time out of their days to assist you. I wish you the best with your research.

I'm not arguing with you. I am merely stating a fact that non of my questions were answered. If some one is looking for specific answers and they are not provided, that isn't really help. is it?

??? Isn’t that what I said? I said the 3 rays I bought previously were uninformed decisions. I talked about my failures, when did I self proclaim at all? I didn’t support Damascus, I didn’t even know he was condescending you? I’m just here to learn from everyone as I admit I’m not a great fish keeper, only starting about 1.5 years ago.
