hmmm... interesting. I've heard that products like these simply change the form of nitrates into something unreadable by our test kits. They read that nitrates are at say 10 ppm, but the toxicity of the end product are no different. Anyone know anything about this?

it is an ion exchanger.

the brand i use is from a dutch store: Wespro Nitrate reduct.
I think its the same as dennerle's but then way cheaper.

I have never heard of that. I know these products lock nitrates in not mask them though. That would be a dirty trick.

Nitrates in general are just the end product of the aerobic part of the nitrogen cycle. High nitrates could result from a poorly maintained tank or (in StiffMeister my case) a very high bio-load. These could also result in high DOCs, but not necessarily AFAIK..

I understand that, but I don't think nitrates are the only thing to worry about.

Well I guess all is speculation as there is really no way to know. Not that I don't believe you Stiff, but the fish I keep are also very happy and healthy without the nitrate remover. Just MO.

The way I see it, the best way to get rid of nitrates is (i) heavy plants ( which is not my case ) (ii) water changes and water changes and (iii) anaerobic filtration ( which is not easy, as I have heard, because it is very difficult to regulate the filter )..
