Retasking an unused canister filter as a gravel vac?

That's working for you, but it might work better to just run it continually as mechanical filtration than to use it every once in a while to vacuum out the tank.

Also, for other people interested in this kind of thing, there's a gravel vac attachment for the HOT Magnum filter called Power Kleen that does this exact same thing. That's 250 GPH (or less) and people say it works. A HOT Magnum is $47.99 for Drs Foster & Smith. Dunno what the Power Kleen runs.

I've seen the hot Magnum filter with the gravel vac, that's what gave me the idea initially.

My tank has a foam/concrete background and the intake/output are embedded in the foam/cement in order to be hidden, so I cant hook up a second canister now, as it would defeat the purpose of hiding the intake/output.

I use an old Magnum 350 as a gravel vac, I just put some tubing on it, got fittings to attach my Python and a return line and done. Works very well and it's easy to clean when I'm finished.
