Retic Ray...surface swimming?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry for your loss man i have had rays do same thing to me and water conditions were pristime no problems at all i think some type of infection they get from wild and just gets triggered by stress.

Yeah i found it got better after a water change as well. But i have three other much bigger rays in the same tank and they are all fine and have never done it. I guess because the motoro is smaller she is more suseptable to bad water ??

larger rays are way more hardy. as is all bigger fish. smaller fish are always more prone to disease and death.

Retics mostly come out of Columbia. They are boxed up very long before they even hit the states or any destination for that matter. I personally think they get ammonia / ammonium poisoning that long in the bags and also nitrate and then it is down hill from there because the damage is mostly internal and on a small ray like that it does not take long for them to kick the bucket.
They might do well for a week or two and then bamm .............
Once there internal organs are damaged that's it. Sorry to hear your loss.
HTH.

Also retics are shipped 10 -20 per bag !!!! That is the way they do it down there, insane in my book! I think this is the major source of the problem with retics...............

I have had my little Peru Motoro for about 6 weeks now and she has very slowly gained a little weight. But she still will only eat earthworms ! At what point would you think a smaller ray is able to be starved onto frozen food ?

usually they do the floating with a weird suction cup look when ur water quality is bad. very very bad. stingrays require prestine water conditions.

mine was doing this n i did a 60% wc and it stopped 20 mins later. still alive n kickin after 3 months :) jus keep up with ur water changes and keeping a ray is as easy as keeping any other fish

my water is perfect, i do WC's twice a week..testings every 3 days..

thanks for the replies guys, csx, i'll be in touch about a motoro

I agree with that. If there is a bit of ammonia in the tank one of my male henlei will do exactly like yours did. Personally I think on any ray tank you should either have an overflow, or a ton of surface agitation (air bubblers, or hang ons) as in mild ammonia spikes this can save your ray by keeping the oxygen high.

retics are stressful, but once they eat they are as easy as the motoros, my retics didn't eat for 2 1/2 weeks before they finally started, ive had them for 6 years now
