So I have been keeping fish for 10 years now, and I really like stingrays. The LFS has some Reticulated Pups for sale for $55 apiece. I know the challenges of rays, and I would put it in a 90 gallon growout tank, eventually it would go into a 180 gallon showtank. They have 2 pups, and both look very healthy, as well as eating very well. I am very interested with stingrays and would love to have one as they are some of my favorite animals. My problem is that my mom is afraid I'll be stung (I'm only 16, but I have 15 aquariums, mini-ponds, and a betta bowl). A few years ago I bought 2 dwarf lionfish and she made me sell them when she found out I was handfeeding them. I was never stung, and she thinks that the stingrays sting will kill me. Can someone please help me out here. I have been researching stingrays for 2 years now, asking questions all over, and I believe I am up to the challenge. By the way, it's tankmates would be discus, angelfish, and some clown loaches. Has anyone ever been stung by a stingray on here before?

No doubt the tankmates will be eaten if they are still small.
A stingray's sting affects everyone differently depending on how allergic you are to its venom. For most people its like a bee sting however, if you're highly allergic it may cause death. The stingray has no reason to sting you as long as you respect it and are cautious when water changing.

the ray is a baby and all the others are fully grown. My dad actually convinced my mom into letting me get it, as well as buying me a suprise! When I cam home from school today a sixteenth tank was sitting on the counter. He told me not to tell mom and put it under one of my other tanks!:nilly::ROFL: I am sooooooooo Happy right now! Can't wait to get the new ten gallon up and running. I'm thinking another oddball lowlight loving fish or maybe a crayfish... the possibilities are endless. By the way, love all the discus in the profile pic.

haven't got the new ray yet... I am hoping to go sometime this weekend to pick it up. The conditions are I wear thick rubber gloves when cleaning the tank, and I have to be extremely careful.

dont worry about the discus or angels being eaten retics have tiny mouths.
in fact keep an eye on the angelfish not pecking at or stressing out the ray!
also just make sure it gets enough food. three times a day for a retic. keep it so it looks like it has a big fat ass!
good luck and be warned you are gonna be addicted to rays now!

Thats funny about the rubber gloves. My best advice is to be cautious, know where the ray is when cleaning the tank or any time you stick your hand in there. Most times they'll bury themselves in the sand and stay hidden until you're done. They're fairly docile from my experience thus far, just don't try to back them into a corner. If they feel trapped, they'll try to get away, if they can't get away, they try to defend themselves.

They don't charge at you..... not even when I nudge them with my siphon... they just slowly cruise away.... always exercise caution... nothing can take the place of good o' common sense.
