^ I agree. Quality usually isn't cheap, and you get what you pay for. You can often find good deals on eBay or Craigslist if you are willing to put in some time researching what is offered. Keep an eye out for the reef tank sales. The average length in the reef hobby is six months, so you can often get fairly new equipment for far less than retail.
And you are wanting to push way too much water through DIY overflows. I no longer recommend them, except for low flow applications (and a backup is required).
