I could just leave dead space under but that could cause dead spots in the sand

my original plan was to put matala mat in between my tubing, but research showed it loses stiffness after a while, and I couldn't find anything that wouldn't require a complete removal some time down the road. that's why I went with the larger stones. plenty of room in between and no chance of breakdown.
are you planning on having a plate or just the tubing?

I was going to do tubing only but a plate could help make the water flow more even I just don't know where to get one for my size tank

here's the video of the RUGF sand video I mentioned before. I think with a coarser sand than he used, a plate with a myriad of small holes, and the double layer of poly filter pad this might work out.
I would definitely run a 10G or 15G test tank before doing a big tank.

I think I'm going to hit up Home Depot tomorrow and just do a jet system I'm not looking for a lot of flow I'm really looking for a gentle way to get water from the bottom of my tank to the top I used to have a spray bar and it was just dumb to me to have clean warm water enter the top and exit the top that's why I wanted a RFUG so it could slowly percolate from the bottom to the top
