Reviews for sump pumps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been out of the hobby for a while but Im back with a bigger tank...
For all the new Wet/Dryer's like myself, can the experienced guys fill us in on which water pumps you've had good experience with and also the bad experiences?

What size tank/setup?
Noise?
Power Usage?
Cost?
Durability/Life of Pump?
Heat Problems?

Here are the ones I have been looking at and the reviews I have read:
Iwaki: Expensive but lasts like a Toyota (it is Japanese made!)
Quiet One: Lives up to its name good price
Rio: Mixed review/economical

Thank you all for your inputs!!!

Little Giant 3-MDQX-SC

What size tank/setup? 265g with 75g sump
Noise? Noticeable, but not overly annoying. Can hear a hum with stand closed.
Power Usage? ~50 watts
Cost? Depends on where you get it, but list price is about $230, can get it for 160 or so.
Durability/Life of Pump? Freakin bullet proof IME
Heat Problems? no

Mag Drive 9.5

What size tank/setup? 108G with 33g sump
Noise? Minimal, none with doors closed
Power Usage? 81watts
Cost? about 88$
Durability/Life of Pump? no problems yet, opperation for a year now
Heat Problems? none, pump in sump and heat is used to keep water at temp

no one else has any pumps they want to tell use about?? Looking for a good pump for my wet/dry also.

I have been using Rio for about 6 yrs no problem at all, then again, a lot ppl dont like it

Do you guys like internal or external sump pumps better. Any preference.

thanks

personally internal, one less spot for your system to leak :). also depending on climate conditions internal may help with temp, obviously better for colder climate area.

i will be following this thread, im in search of a pump that provides 3000L per hour at about 1.8mtr head height :).

i personally have 2 eheim universal pumps that have been running for about 8-9years, they have not caused me any problems and are still quiet. problem is they may not have a pump with required output, their universals max out at 3400L 0 head height.
