I never kept one but from a friend of mine who has they seem to be like the cichla genera of central/south america. they are predators & usually won't bother whoever can't be swallowed. I'll try some when I get a bigger tank probally put it with some other large passive predators. They do get a nice size though.
The genus Rhamphochromis contains at least 16 species that vary quite a bit in size yet all have a similar "barracuda-like" shape. If you know anyone who has a copy of Offshore Cichlids of Lake Malawi by George F. Turner, its a good book to check out many of the different Rhamps. They are pretty rare in the hobby and usually not well identified. Rhamps are not known as "Malawi Eye-Biters" (an old and worn out nicname for D. compressiceps). One of my "dream fish" would be Rhamphomchromis lucius. IMO, the pics I've seen just show pure "evil" with the large head and visible teeth. I've had C. frontosas bite on my whole finger without fear, but I doubt that I'd try it with any adult Rhamphochromis
That is a bad ass fishy! I want one too!
What about a Champsochromis caeruleus? Are those related? They look a little more like a D. Compressiceps. Does anyone know where to get a Champ. Caeruleus?
