Rhaph with thyroid tumor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right I'll get some photos on the weekends, thanx for all the attention!

The tumor my rhaph developed was under it's jaw, not quite the same with mad ness's rhaphs. Good news is it just all of a sudden disappeared!
Wierd eh? Not a clue what happened...

btw Mad ness, I think those feeders are a bit to big for your rhaphs. My rhaphs are much more comfortable with small sized foods. Don't know if that's the case with your's?

yes quite possibly but from what I can see rhaphs have no problem gulping big fish. None of the other rhaphs developed the same issue. I had 7, which isn't a great sample set but my impression here is these fish are by design, evolved swallowing machines. Hurting it's own throat like this during a swallow is a serious design flaw either in mechanically or instinctually.

the last survivor of my rhaphs, foot long fish does the same on regular basis with even larger in proportion - fan tails and koi. I used baby fan tails because they are slow and easy to catch. these photos were from about 10months ago.

It's possible the lock jaw/broken jaw whatever it is does not happen during feeding. these fish are especially akward movers. possible it happened crashing into glass or tangle with another rhaph. or as you say it's some kind of thyroid gland, which is part of the immune system, right? Could it be water parameters?

i was also thinking it might be from bashing into the glass.

my rhaphs also love large feeders ;)

Now that I think of it, It had been starved for quite a while when it had the tumor. Excessive starving caused swelling of the thyroid gland? Cause it disappeared after two days of continuous feeding.
I was trying to get them on something new, only one of the four fell for it, man they really need a variety of food, they only eat one type as of now.
BTW, I'm 18 TODAY! YEAH! Feels different already!
