whats makes all these rhoms i see different? things like blue diamond, black etc..., and what are the best collection points for a black rhom that will turn out large and as black/ steel grey as possible? i hear alot about xingu and venezuela. please school me in the mightiness that is RHOM!

just differend species and different location but same family...

all the same species (serra rhombeus), but the colors and varients vary do to collection point or origin or collection, xingus come from the xingu area, venny's come from venezuela.

Most black rhom's are Peru based, and are easier to find, more available at larger sizes 14"+. Black diamonds I believe are venezuela?????, and as of a few months ago really really hard to find. Usually any of the diamond rhoms don't come in larger than 12" or so. Some people will say body shape varys via collection point. IE rhoms from some collection points seem to have higher backs. But some importers can't tell collection point by body shape so the differences in body shape are slight.

If you want a large one I would buy a large one as they grow stupid slow from 6"+ and some might not reach the sizes that you can get already from wild caught large ones.

diamond just refers to reflective scales of certain colours

varients are named alot on collection point like xingu rhom (from rio xingu, brazil), vinny rhom (venezala), guyana rhom, peruvian rhom.....

prices just go on supply and demand
for example: peru exports tons so the price is low while venezala doesnt export nearly aas many so a "vinny" rhom could coust 3x more then a peruvian just bacasue it is rarer. It is same species but just has a different collection point

a black p will be pitch black if substrate is black

but based on all those collection pionts, which rhom usually turns out the largest? i totally understand the collection point thing but i have noticed that almost every pic of a xingu has that blocky forehead, is this trait to xingu only? do the peru rhoms usually turn out large compared to other points? info like this is what im curious about from actuall owners. please post pics of your rhoms.

cichlaguapote i want to grow my own rhom out, thats what gives me pleasure is looking at a fish and saying i raised that! i just want to get a rhom from a collection point that usually produces nice adult rhoms you know what im sayin?

They are all the same species so in theory no matter the variant they should all have the same max size (18"-22"). I understand you want to grow one out but at the same one I don't think I know anyone who grew one out to large size. So I'm not sure if growing to 18" in an aquarium is obtainable. And as you might know they grow like 1/2"-1" a year so you're looking at a decade at least to get a small fish to a decent size. OPEFE is a good site, Frank is a master there.

yeah i was guessing 5" in the first year and around 10yrs to get to around 14" or so. i dont need it to be huge by any means, i mean a 12+" rhom is a big p that is impresive in its own rights. i'll contact frank and see what he says, id like to go peru, no need to spend extra cash for basically the same fish as a "rare" vinny in my eyes, im not that deep into piranhas.

yeah upto 6" can be done in the first year.. you know a little about them then.. and if you use the term "vinny" then you know alot.. :)
