Rhom or Red Bellies?

Do rhoms still show aggression towards the owner and claim territory like piranhas in a shoal? Do they crunch their mouth to show hunger?
Do they do any self-aquascaping like other single wet-pet fish?

IMO, red bellies don't show aggression toward people. Skittish fish. from all the years here and my own personal experience, each rhom is different. Some are finger chasers from the the get go, others take years to get comfortable in their surroundings

No idea what they look like when they're hungry. I think reds are just always working their jaws.

I've had both rhom and reds bite equipment but not cichlids like aquascaping

In a 55, i wouldnt bother with reds to be honest. If you're okay with slow growth, get a 3-4" rhom and enjoy the ride.

I know every fish is different, but my rhoms have been way more active and outgoing than any red belly shoal ive had. The once a week feeding theyre more active and frantic, but the rest of the time they all chill in their spots. Like 5/6 of my rhoms have been really outgoing and active. Patrolling and chasing and all that good stuff.

Now, if you have +10 adult reds/cariba/piraya, then youre really talking about some good shoal behaviour. Less than that they seem to all just hang out in their space.

Warning both rhoms and pubis can be pretty skittish. I had no worries chasing away my shoal of rbp with my hand to scape the tank or do maintenance, and my big rhom is super cautious. Not a glass banger at all, but I also chalk this up to individual fish behavior and because he was wild caught at a large size 11" I figure he spent more than a couple years terrorizing some river in brazil before he was caught.
