anyone heard of keeping rift lake snails. i have african cichlids from lake tanganyika and was wondering if anyone knows where to get rift lake snails.

I'm afraid you'd be disappointed with rift lake snails. Most are tiny and resemble our run-of-the-mill pond snails and trumpet snails.
I've been successful in keeping nerite snails in my african tanks with rift lake salts added. These snails are commonly sold for marine aquaria and can adapt to brackish and fresh alkaline conditions. Great little detritis feeders.

i see stores selling the rift lake snail shells for shell dwellers and they look like the turbo snails. they are about 3-4" long. much bigger that pond snails. bad thing is i can't find any good information on them. almost like the don't exist.

turbo snail and muffin snail shells are commonly sold for use with shellies but, aren't from the rift lakes.
The problem is that most of the larger snail species are illegal for importing into the US. The species that are legal get caught up in being grouped with the undesireables.

Lake Tanganyika in particular boasts an amazing range of snails, many of which exhibit striking outward similarities with certain marine forms. None, to my knowledge, are exported to the United States.
