Right or Left Hand Retrieve..?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
usualy the dom hand holds the rod and other hand is on the real. but thats usualy. when it comes to fishing its kinda like skate boarding. some are reg, F footed reg, goofey, and F footed goofy. its what ever your comfy with unless your a beginner id try to start with dom hand on rod and reel with the other. i fish 10 hours a day myself but im not hucking heavy line or baits over n over so i can stick with the same hand. mfk fishing trip anyone?

I can write with both hands I also fish with both hands and !!!! !!! with both hands. I retrieve with my right hand when use a bait caster and retrieve with my left when using a spinner real. Most spinning reals can be changed from right to left. My uncle did not know this until a few years back. He was using his spinning real up side down with the real facing up-wards. What was he thinking.

haha your uncle didnt know spinning reels are changable? i can fish both hands to but i do reeling with my right and holding with my left..more comfortable..but yea i think i pretty much know now but still im seeing a lot of interesting comments about this..

i am right handed and have right side retrieve. i cant reel in smoothly with my left

i dont understand why anyone would not want to reel on the same side regardless of the reel style. dont think that would be comfortable. when i started fishing i only had spinning reels, by the time i could afford a baitcast reel i was only comfortabe reeling with my left hand because that was how i always had my spinning reel set up?
wierd

The "normal" setup is a left-handed retrieve for spinning/spincasting/flyfishing reels. Level-wind reels are normally built with a right-handed retrieve. Sorry southpaws, but "normal" means right-handed. :(

I think the difference probably is that in spinfishing and flyfishing you are emphasizing the casting and action of the retrieve, so you want your dominant hand always on the pole.

With trolling, jigging, bottomfishing, et cetera the emphasis is more on the retrieval or pay-out of line. When you do cast a big level-wind setup it is usually with both hands.

im gonna agree with casting is with your dominate hand and yes i reel with my right hand but that has nothing to do really do with retrieve i have kinda found out..its what mostly feels comfortable..but your kinda wrong on trolling i troll and i dont use both hands i will cast with one hand/or have one out and use my other hand to let out the lead core..but it might be different for certain people..

Like you say, it all comes down to what is comfortable and how you want to do things - I was just thinking about why most spin/fly setups are left-handed and most level-wind reels are right-handed. I really don't know, just an idea.

I troll quite a bit. I don't cast at all, just let out the line. I was thinking more of people I've seen fishing salmon and sturgeon from the shore - they use big baitcasting reels on long poles and cast with both hands.

I did have a bass casting rod (one handed, pistol grip style handle) that I bought with a left retrieve because I was used to spinning. I liked it that way, but the fact is that most baitcasting reels in the store are right retrieve. Do people (right-handed) that buy these reels cast with their left hand or switch hands after casting?
