but the fact is that most baitcasting reels in the store are right retrieve. Do people (right-handed) that buy these reels cast with their left hand or switch hands after casting?

Just the way it is I suppose. I use left hand retrieve spinning reels and right hand casting reels. After I throw out my casting reels I switch hands. It does not bother me as I use these for catfish and floating live baits so I set the rod down after casting.

glad to find i'm not the only one... I also reel with my left hand on spinning reels and reel with my right on baitcasters, but i cast right handed either way lol

Like you say, it all comes down to what is comfortable and how you want to do things - I was just thinking about why most spin/fly setups are left-handed and most level-wind reels are right-handed. I really don't know, just an idea.

I troll quite a bit. I don't cast at all, just let out the line. I was thinking more of people I've seen fishing salmon and sturgeon from the shore - they use big baitcasting reels on long poles and cast with both hands.

I did have a bass casting rod (one handed, pistol grip style handle) that I bought with a left retrieve because I was used to spinning. I liked it that way, but the fact is that most baitcasting reels in the store are right retrieve. Do people (right-handed) that buy these reels cast with their left hand or switch hands after casting?
i got confused by your question but i cast with my left since its more dominate than my right..as i said before though im ambidexterious..but use right hand retrieve..since i reel with my left and cast with left but i never did a two hand cast..even salmon/trout fishing (starting this spring:drool::D;)) but yea when i said i cast when i troll i meant with a regular spinning rod and reel with a little boat and i also meant i toss behide the boat then let out line..

For me baitcast is right handed retrieve while spinning is either left or right. Fly fishing is either side as well.

I'm a flyfisherman and i pull with my right and reel with my left and am right handed. Alot of people say that if you're right you should reel right because you cant spin the fastest but i think thats kind of stupid because its not about landing a fish the fastest plus you can pull harder with your right if youre right handed. so i think its just preference

i think your right id rather land the fish safely than just reel it in fast..cause if you reel fast your tension might go down with a fish like steelheads or salmon and it wouldnt be good if they left your line...:irked:lol

Nice feed back everybody however I don't thing anybody answerd the questiong Yellowperch is after... The hand you reel with is the hand you retrieve with. However I do cast with my right hand both spinning and baitcasting while reeling with my left hand for spinning and reel with my right while using a baitcasting reel. Hope this helps Yellowperch.

lol thnx but its interesting people change hands with certain reels

I'm righty but I reel with my left hand and hold the rod with my right. It takes way more strength to physically heave the fish up, where it's essentially your strength against the fish, then to turn the reel, which is just mechanical.
